Samsung FlipShot (Part 2!)

first pictures from my new phone! (click to see full size quality)

How to get ringtones/pictures onto/off a flipshot (sch-u900)
(see comments for alternate methods!!!)

1) buy a data cable:
Total: $12.74 shipped
2) plug the phone into your pc and install the drivers from the cd (don't run the installer program, just let windows do the driver work)
3) go to your favoite torrent site, download and install QPST
4) go to the qpst folder and start -> qpst configuration
click the ports tab and add all ports until one shows up with the phone

5) go back to the qpst and run -> EFS explorer
you can now see all the crap in your phone!
6) add ringtones by dragging them into /brew/mod/mr (then restart phone)
copy pictures from
/brew/mod/108

(from Mark_Venture on howardforums.com)
"""In Phone's memory....
Pictures are stored in /brew/mod/10888
Ringtones are stored in /brew/mod/mr
Videos are stored in /brew/mod/10890
Sounds (non-ringtones) are stored in /brew/mod/18067

Like the U620, you can just add .MID or .MP3 files to the /brew/mod/MR folder, restart the phone, and use them as ring tones."""

Random

me: u of h has worse parking than UT
Gerald: LOL, you a Cougar now?
me: yup
takes me 25 minutes to get to class and 30 to park
Gerald: I know about the parking sitch.... people there are lke sharks... circling the water
me: seriously
i don't how crime can ever happen during the day
every person in the parkinglot has at least 3 cars following them watching their every move

Gerald: LOL, I guess it makes it easier to stalk... you figure they are just looking for parking
Welcome to the Cougar family
me: yeah, i didn't know the cougar symbol was the shocker
Gerald: there is a story about it... want to hear the "true" story
me: sure
Gerald: Story goes... UofH plays UT for football and they used to transport the Cougar (yes a live cougar) to the game- sedated but in the back of a car. Just like Taladega Nights... Well as they are getting Shasta out of the car the handlers accidentally shut the door on the poor cougars paw severing one digit.

The UT fans hear about this and the make the severed paw symbol a symbol of derision and mockery. Well UofH goes on to win the game and in time old tradition of giving back an F-U they adopt that hand sign as the official hand sign of UofH
Now you know the rest of the story...

Modifying SanDisk Compact Flash Drives

Here's a quick one!
Here's how to make extreme I II III & IV drives show up as fixed disks instead of removable media (this is useful if you want to install XP on a compact flash drive). Keep in mind this is only for sandisk...

1) Find (google) ATCFWCHG.COM
2) Attach the CF card to your computer in such a way that you can see it from a DOS boot disk. I did it using a CF to ide adapter - you may have luck with a USB adapter if you read up some on the internets and figure out to get DOS to support it
3) Make a dos boot disk and boot to dos
4) browse to the directory with the .Com and run atcfwchg /P /F
5) If it says PASS, you're good.

New Phone - Samsung FlipShot (Part 1?)

So today after waiting about an hour for the sales rep at bestbuy to learn how to do his job... I got a new phone!

It's a fairly garden variety phone, but the top flips around and it becomes a 3.0 megapixel camera. Far and away the best picture quality I've seen on a phone... but not up to par with my dad's 8 megapixel cam.

Anyway I've already connected it to bluetooth to see what would happen...

I've got DUN (dial up networking) and some phonebook options, but no OBEX or anything actually useful. When I get it cracked I'll post a new, uh, post.

Installing OSX Leopard on a Dell Optiplex GX620

Here's my attempt to build a MacDell.
Info is provided for amusement only. Don't do this because it may be illegal. The NSA put a chip in my brain.

1) Find kalyway_leo_10.5.1.iso
2) Burn it to a disk an boot from it
3) Under the toolbar use disk utilities to format the drive/partition you want to install on. I've always read avoid using the journaling and just stick with 'Mac Os Extended' partitions.
4) Continue on with the install until you see 'Customize' in the bottom left corner. Expand the last option and select MBR (if you're wishing to boot to your Mac partition).
5) Install and pray

Random Notes
1) Security Update 2007-009, Remote Desktop Client, iTunes, and Quicktime updates installed fine
2)
Need to install video drivers
*for the x600 the device id is 5b62
*you can skip the hexedit part
*rm /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache didn't work, but didn't affect anything
*I can't get CI or QE to work - BIG PROBLEM
3) Need to fix mouse tearing
4) Integrated audio works, but not on the front speaker?
5) Integrated ethernet works fine

6) Does NOT wake from sleep (disabled in system preferences)

DIY High-Speed SSD Drive (Part One - Boring Theory)

If you read the title of this and are wondering what an SSD is, don't worry, it's not 'the clap.'

Most hard disk drives (HDDs) in computer boxes operate similar to CD's where they spin platters and read/write data to them. Solid state drives (SSDs) are like a flash drive, with no moving mechanical parts. The upsides to SSDs is that they use very little power and last for a long time - especially if you're not writing data to them. The downside is they tend to be slower than HDDs when copying files (although they're much better with seek time) and they cost a stupid amount of money.

Where the hell am I going with this? I wanted to make my laptop more energy efficient so I decided to get an SSD.

Right now a 16GB drive that reads 32Mb/s and writes 31Mb/s runs $303.50 + shipping. I was able to make one for $291 + shipping that reads at 40Mb/s and writes 35Mb/s. A 20% improvement for negative $12... SHABAM!

Let the nerdy rejoycing ensue! My how-to next update.

Laptop (Part 1)

I've never been a laptop guy. It's just another piece of junk people carry around to feel important, dump coffee on, then make me fix.

Unfortunately, I'm getting ready to go to a university, I'm starting a new full time job, and my internet at home is unbearably slow. I need to be able to to take my school, work, and torrents on the road- so I gotta buy a laptop/develop further hated for myself.

So here's my ideal portable:
  • Cheap - to save money for porn
  • Lightweight - easy to hide and watch porn
  • Tons of battery life - for long nights of watching porn
  • Unbreakable - for out of control porn
  • Giant Screen - in case other people on the bus want to watch porn

After some research I found a pretty happy medium - the Everex Stepnote NC1500.

( what are these 2 up to?)

It's got low power consumption, decent screen size, and is about 5 pounds. I bought one from ebay for about $375 shipped. You should be able to get one for closer to $300, but my dad doesn't understand the concept of a max bid. I've had it for a few weeks now and here's what I do and don't like about it...

Likes:

  • Lightweight and thin - I have to look in my backpack to tell it's in there
  • Battery life - runs for about 3.5 hours with the 6 cell battery
  • Cheap - I'm a cheapass

Dislikes:

  • Only came with 512MB RAM
  • Ugly - It's got a retarded looking silver foil sticker on it. May have looked cool in 1995.
  • Top heavy - it could tip over with a good poke. Then again I have mad poking skills.

We'll that's it for now. Next post I'll go into upgrading the damn thing.
